Scoot Boot Farrier's 2 day course.
What a way to spend a weekend! I was thrilled to be offered a place to attend the Hoofboot Farriers 2 day Scoot Boot fitting course, thanks to a generous offer from the Hoof Bootique!
This course has been carefully curated to really deliver the knowledge needed to feel confident in your ability to be able to customise the Scoot Boot. From simply adjusting a tricky fit, to adding in supports and helping the horse to really be comfortable in how it moves.
Created and delivered by none other than Robbie Richardson and Mark Johnson.
Having learnt a lot from Mark previously and only hearing amazing things about Robbie. I had high expectations. They were certainly exceeded.
The pioneer course was hosted at The Forge in Stoneleigh Showground, and it was definitely worth the hike from Cornwall!
Spending time amongst a mixed group of hoof care professionals, both farriers and trimmers, all eager to expand their knowledge, and gain some new skills with the sole goal of modifying the Scoot Boot! The aim of the game? Learning how far we could really push the Scoots, in terms of both sizing and adaptions.
Day 1 was spent really getting to know the Scoot Boot, inside and out. The best way to get the most accurate fit, which is absolutely key, it's all in the measurements!
We were shown how to personalise the boots to suit each individual horses requirements, and the best tools for the job. Some of us had seen and worked with Scoots and other boots before, but for some it was a whole new world. It was great to be able to share tips and tricks amongst us. In the afternoon we were able to start getting hands on and look at the methods available to stretch the boots to alter the fit. I didn't know there was such a choice of heat guns on the market! Robbie and Mark were superb, really letting us get our creations started and answering any and all questions fired at them.
Lunch times were spent together swapping stories, and soaking in as much knowledge as Robbie and Mark had to offer!
Back in the office for day 2 and we arrived to power tools galore! The heat guns were back, as well as sanders, grinders and so many variations of material to work with. From the simple types of pad to various types of rubber and plastic to really get the brains working.
After double checking we were all happy with what was covered on day 1 we were let loose to really get in depth.
We were all given a Scoot boot the day before and got to really get into the nitty gritty. We all made various adaptions based on what would be the most beneficial for what we use the boots for. For myself, the ability to add in permanent padding, to support certain structures is an absolute game changer!
There were various techniques to be learnt and everything was demonstrated and talked about until we were confident. This involved the knowledge of which materials and glues to use for which adaptions, and exactly how we could go about it.
The best demo of the day was by far watching Robbie cut and then weld a Scoot Boot stem back together! The material the boots are made from is such a great material to work with.
At the end of the day we got to sit down and go through all the adaptions people had made. It gave us a chance to see all the possibilities that can occur when you put a bunch of likeminded professionals in a room together.
We were given a fabulous pack of information and so many materials to take home with us, ranging from different pad and support material, to spare bits of Scoot Boot!
Oh and a beautifully presented certificate.
I can wholeheartedly say it was an amazing weekend, every little thing had been thought through and presented in such a way that you really didn't feel like you only had 2 days to master the skills. The ability to have access to the videos before hand meant we walked in with a knowledge of exactly what we were there to do. It was great to get hands on and put the skills to the test.
If you are thinking of expanding your working relationship with Scoot Boots I recommend booking yourself on to this course. The attention to detail and deliverance of the course is brilliant. Mark and Robbie have really pulled something spectacular out of the bag here, and I truly hope more hoof care professionals choose to add this skill to their toolkit as it is certainly one worth having!
My thanks again, go out to Liz and the Hoof Bootique for the opportunity to attend!
Kind regards,
Jade
