Tools and Materials
Throughout this entire course we as Hoofcare providers will most likely have most tools we need for boot adaptation already to hand and if not, then no great expense or specialist equipment is needed.
In this video we do a walkthrough of all the common items we deploy as we change and optimise the Scoot boots
The Scoot recommendation for the Scoot Boot fit and Anti Slip Shims
Scoot have a recommended fit for their boots and its important to understand precisely what is looked for in the optimum size / fit as this is our benchmark as we look to adapt to the individual hoof, horse and its way of moving.

Which size of Scoot Boot part 1
Getting the right size Scoot Boot is actually very simple and yet, there is currently a very high percentage of boots bought "off the shelf" which are returned.
In these 2 sizing lessons we dive into detail of what the basic fit should look like and also how you can streamline the process before you are even with the client.
NOTE! It is VERY important to get clear photos from the prospective client showing not just the feet to be sized, but also so YOU can see the measurements in question.
Following and adhering to these guidelines will save an enormous amount of wasted time and potential failure.
Which size of Scoot Boot part 2
We have some clear photos and some clear measurements so now we arrive at the horse, because we have those measurements just as with shoeing, we can now take a narrowed down selection of boots knowing that if its possible to fit the horse, we should be able to without trouble.

Scoot Boot Gaiters
The Scoot Boots come with gaiters as standard but it is also possible to purchase the Endurance Gaiter which offers a far greater coverage for the back of the foot.
Gaiters are used to act as a buffer between the plastic of the boot and the soft areas of the hoof, giving added protection against any potential rubbing. In this lesson we see how to fit them and their recommended use.
Scoot Boot Mud Straps
The Scoot Boot Mud Straps can prove to be a valuable addition, designed to add an extra layer of boot retention when the going gets tougher or the ride gets faster.
Its no gimmick to have these straps in the bright colours as they make finding a lost boot that much easier and very easy to see a written phone number on them or address etc ..
Lets find out more.

Stretching the Scoot Boot
Its important to know the reason for latching onto the Scoot Boot as our main go to Hoof Boot, its because of its simplicity, functionality and most of all its adaptability.
As we know, we deal with everything from blocky footed cob types to more of the Thoroughbred long sloping feet and how differently the backs of their feet present in terms of volume and structure.
We may have a boot that fits the bulk of the hoof but we struggle to get an optimum heel fit or, perhaps we need a very snug hind foot fit and really would like to go to the next size down.
The ability to stretch the boot using heat, means we have quite a lot of flexibility at our fingertips.
Optimising the Scoot Boot fit to the movement of the horse
When we are comfortable we have the correct size and fit, our next consideration is that when the horse comes to move in them, we need to make sure the boots won’t twist or rub.
There are a few steps we can take to harmonise or as we call it optimise the fit which will steadily become standard practice and will set what the HoofBoot farrier community and our friends do, apart from the simple "out of the bag and onto the horse" approach.

Creating Breakover in the Scoot Boot
Quite possibly if you do nothing else to a boot during the optimising process, the creation of breakover and essentially breakover in the right place, pertinent to the horse as an individual is THE most important element of making sure the boot moves with the horse.
Asymmetric feet can we or can't we fit a Scoot Boot
We know that nothing works for everything and Scoot Boots are no different, we are back to needing good clear photos! If we don’t already know the horse and for this foot, although we may have good clear measurements to go with it, the measurements we receive will be very different from the foot’s actual requirements.
IF we cannot make it work its better to walk away than fail, although as The HoofBoot farriers community grows, we hope innovation will grow with it.

Heat welding the Scoot Boot
The ability to heat weld the Scoot Boot brings further adaptability, what if for example the horses heel bulbs are very low, the boot fits but the heels sit very high.
we can take out a section of boot and re-weld it back together again or, what if we have an awkward flare that just needs a pleat or pleats in the boot sides to bring them snug and conform, heat welding is another skill we can bring to the Scoot Boot's adaptability portfolio.
Adding a basic caudal support pad to Scoot Boots
There is much said in farriery and hoofcare about adding caudal support to shoeing packages and now we can do this in a boot.
This basic caudal pad is designed to give both caudal comfort and stimulation while aiding joint alignment.

Adding a caudal support pad with a frog tongue to Scoot Boots
Adding internal pads to Scoot Boots is literally about what the fit of the boot will allow and your own imagination as the pad configurations lend themselves to much innovation and problem solving.
In this video we extend the caudal pad into some dedicated frog support.
Adding an ultra comfort caudal pad to Scoot Boots
Materials we use as pads in Scoot Boots will vary depending upon the reason we are using them, in this video we design more of a therapeutic type pad which would also lend itself to impregnation by perhaps Red Horse Field Paste or some such remedial product.
Some horses just need a little help getting added stimulation over their frogs and this material is excellent for that and is easily renewed.

Frog stimulation pad for Scoot Boots
In this video we see just the frog stimulation pad being deployed, remember, it doesn’t have to be only in this material, always assess need and function and then determine what will work best.
Collateral groove support pad for Scoot Boots
This collateral groove support pad is an interesting concept, part of the collateral grooves sit beneath the densest part of the pedal bone and offer us the chance to give the hoof some very dedicated support, negating the need for dental impression material.
Acting as nature’s dirt plug, these collateral groove pads by sitting up into the grooves on the sole of the hoof, also provide a degree of stability within the boot against slippage / boot twist.

Adding an external pad
One of the greatest advantages of the Scoot Boot for farriers and hoofcare providers is its ability to be modified and in this video, we see an external pad being applied.
When we add an external to any boot, it then becomes a matter of shaping the pad or even building on it to perform the required function.
A badly fitting saddle we know can cause havoc to a horses body, so is it possible the a short term orthotic applied via a boot could also have a positive effect.
Adding grip to an external pad for Scoot Boots
There may come a time when you need to add an external pad to a Scoot Boot but are concerned that, due to the horses environment this may cause concerns about slipping.
While adding grip to a pad isn’t overly technical, it is important to know it can be done and to think of it where circumstances may demand some extra help.

Fitting a Scoot Boot to a live horse
All the changes we make to a boot (if any) still need to relate to the end product, the horses comfort and function.
As experience grows you will see how a workflow becomes established, just like the process of shoeing a horse so does the final boot fitting have its process and materials involved.

As soon as any alterations are made to a Hoof Boot the warranty is void so the boots cannot be returned!
